Cancer treatment and prevention
“Cancer” is one of the most frightening words a woman can hear. According to the American Cancer Society, doctors diagnosed about 110,000 new cases of gynecological cancer in women in 2018. Gynecological cancers include:
- Uterine/endometrial cancer
- Ovarian cancer
- Cervical cancer
- Vulvar cancer
- Vaginal cancer
- Fallopian tube cancer (very rare)
Of all types of gynecological cancer, doctors have a specific screening test for cervical cancer only. They diagnose all other gynecological cancers based on the appearance of abnormal symptoms. Complicating matters is the fact that many gynecological cancers initially develop with no apparent symptoms. Therefore, getting regular gynecological care from a medical doctor – which includes an annual exam -is so important in the fight against cancer.
Based on years of research, we now know that most cervical cancers are preventable. The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is responsible for most cases of cervical cancer. It is also implicated in a high number of anal, mouth and throat cancer cases. A vaccine against HPV is available and recommended for adolescents and young adults (both male and female) before they become sexually active. The HPV vaccine can prevent these types of cancer.
Family Planning
Dr. Chismar offers complete family planning services and support. Please see Contraception for more information regarding the types of contraception he recommends.
Menstrual disorders
Many women experience temporary or chronic menstrual disorders. Dr. Chismar can diagnose and treat the most common types of menstrual problems, including painful menstruation; excessive bleeding; and lack of menstruation, among others.
Menopause
Every woman encounters menopause – the natural cessation of menstruation. Menopause causes permanent changes in a woman’s body. Dr. Chismar can help women identify the onset of menopause, and can help alleviate uncomfortable symptoms of menopause, including irregular menstruation, “hot flashes,” painful intercourse, and other conditions that accompany menopause.
Diagnostic and screening ultrasounds
Ultrasound examinations are very good at identifying conditions like cancer, anatomical abnormalities, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and other common gynecological conditions. Dr. Chismar can perform both abdominal and trans-vaginal ultrasounds in the office to screen for and diagnose gynecological conditions.
Abnormal Conditions
Dr. Chismar can diagnose, monitor, and treat a wide range of abnormal gynecological conditions. These include:
- Endometriosis
- Uterine Fibroids
- Abnormal Bleeding
- Pelvic pain
- Breast discharge and masses
- Vaginal infections
Any time you experience abnormal symptoms, including discharge, pain, itching, foul odors, the discovery of one or more masses, discharge from your nipples, or uncontrolled menstrual bleeding, you should call to set up an evaluation. In many cases, these conditions, although worrisome, may be easily and rapidly treated.
